2023 September Preparation Course for the CCFP Exam: Pre-Course Modules

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is designed for practice eligible physicians who are preparing to undertake the CCFP Exam*. The course will provide participants with an overview of the principles of family medicine, an overview of the patient-centred clinical method, an introduction to the Simulated Office Oral (SOO) component of the exam, skills and strategies to use in patient interviews that can be applied to the exam, four practice SOOs with feedback from experienced examiners, pre-course practice with Short Answer Management Problems (SAMPs) and feedback, an opportunity to practice writing SAMPs in an exam-like setting and to discuss the SAMP component of the exam.

The focus of this course is to help participants familiarize themselves with the format, types of questions, and marking scheme as well as to share tips and tricks on how answer, and not to provide detailed educational teaching on the hot topics.

* NOTE: Content of this course is not endorsed by The College of Family Physicians of Canada nor is it reviewed by the Board of Examiners at the College to ensure alignment with the CCFP certification examination. Participating in the course does not guarantee success on the certification examination.

Completion of the online pre-course module is mandatory prior to attending the workshop activity. We do track the completion of the online module to ensure the expected learning outcome.

- Demonstrate the patient-centered clinical method in simulated examination stations

- Apply a planned approach to components (SOOs and SAMPs) of the Certification Examination in Family Medicine

- Recognize techniques to improve performance at the Certification Examination in Family Medicine

Patrick Lee

He joined The University of Calgary Department of Family Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 2012.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eHe received from the Department of Family Medicine awards for Excellence in Clinical Teaching in 2012 and Excellence in Academic Teaching in 2019. He received the Dr. Allan Jones Award from the Faculty of Medicine Class of 2018 in recognition of” Tremendous Enthusiasm, Innovation and Compassion in a Leadership Position.”u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eIn April 2020, The Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) nominated him as a CFMS Champion for his contribution to a positive learning environment at the Cumming School of Medicine. He also received the Jones Family Award of Teaching Excellence from the Faculty of Medicine in May 2021 in recognition of hisu0022 Outstanding Dedication and Contribution to Undergraduate Medical Educationu0022.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eHe teaches Family Medicine residents as a SOOs coordinator how to prepare for The College of Family Physicians of Canada Simulated Office Orals (SOOs) examination. He is a Co-Chair of the sub-planning committee from the Cumming School of Medicine Office of Faculty Development that offers 2 workshops each year for International Medical Graduates to prepare for the afore mentioned SOOs examination.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eHe teaches clinical clerks in Course 8 as a Master Teacher from the Cumming School of Medicine. He is the Integrative Course Chair for the first and second-year medical students at the University of Calgary Medical Faculty. As a Co-Chair in the Physical Examination sub-unit, he teaches medical students how to perform a physical examination.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eHe believes in reaching out and offer guidance to the medical students at the start of the medical school when the transition can be overwhelming. He would offer optional review sessions to integrate different clinical schemes from the Calgary Black Book with a primary care approach. His motto to the students is to “Have a happy smiley face “after each learning session.u003c/pu003e

Timothy Adebisi

u003cpu003eBachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (Nigeria) MD MRCGP CCFP MSc (Course Co-Chair)u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eClinical Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, University of Calgaryu003c/pu003enu003cpu003eDr. Adebisi is a down-to-heart Family Physician in Airdrie, Alberta who has been in clinical Practice for more than 26 years. He started his medical career at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he completed his undergraduate medical training. He proceeded to Surgical and Orthopedic post-graduate training in the same university until he left for the United Kingdom to further his studies.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eIn 2004, he started a training program in General Practice in England which was successfully completed in 2006. He worked in several cities and practices in the United Kingdom as a seasoned GP for many years. For his love for North America, he relocated to Alberta, Canada in 2011. He initially practised in the rural setting of Three Hills before moving to Airdrie, his current location.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eDr Adebisi has a special interest in General Dermatology. This passion drove him to further his postgraduate studies in General and Practical Dermatology. He holds a Masters degrees (MSC) in Clinical Dermatology from South Wales, United Kingdom. He recently acquired another postgraduate qualification in General Dermatology from Queensland, Australia.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eHe feels the pain of patients with chronic pain. This motivated him to take special training in the management of chronic pain. He worked in the multidisciplinary chronic pain clinic in Airdrie where he offered medical services, helps, supports and hope to patients.u003c/pu003enu003cpu003eDr Adebisi provides mental health services to his patients at the Kings Medical Centre. He works collaboratively with the Therapists and Psychologists in the community to offer quality care to patients with mental health concerns. He has a passion for teaching. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Family Medicine Department, University of Calgary and a Preceptor to medical students and Family Medicine Residents.u003c/pu003e

Sameh Wahba (Course Co-Chair)

Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Calgary

Dr Wahba graduated from medical school, in Cairo, Egypt with honours and he was a winner of the National Award of Excellency. Subsequently, he completed residency training in Internal Medicine and passed the speciality examination with distinction. In addition, he completed a Master’s Degree in Internal Medicine. He then completed a research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, USA). Next, he moved to Oman, where he worked as a Senior Consultant Physician and Deputy Head of the Acute Medicine Department. While in Oman, he practised Rheumatology for 12 years and was also heavily involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and he was selected as the best trainer in the Internal Medicine residency program, as well as the best ACLS instructor. He has also received the Diploma of Child Health (DCH) from Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He was also a Clinical Examiner for the PACES, MRCP UK exams in the specialty of Internal Medicine. He was also the coordinator and organizer of the MRCP examinations at the Royal Hospital in Oman.

Subsequently, he moved with his family to Canada and started his Canadian training. He joined the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Calgary and was selected as the chief resident for the NE, FM Residency Program. In 2016, he was the Winner of the Dr. R. S. Grainger Award from the University of Calgary. He passed the LMCC and CCFP exams and started practising at the Mountain View Medical Centre in Calgary. He enjoys providing care to a diversity of patients including refugees and newcomers settling in Calgary. Currently, Dr Wahba is a clinical assistant professor at the Department of Family Medicine (University of Calgary) where he participates in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has received the Gold Star award twice for teaching the Integrative Course. Furthermore, he has participated in CCFP preparation courses over the past few years. He is committed to supporting all learners and enhancing their educational experience.
