Speaker Bios

Resident, University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine 

Dr. Gabrielle Wagner is a fourth year resident in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Calgary. She has a longstanding interest in intimate partner violence and improving care for individuals who have experienced it. In university and medical school she was the co-president of the students against domestic violence association and volunteered with children who experienced domestic violence. Her interest and advocacy work followed her into residency where she has pursued research in the intersection between obstetrics and intimate partner violence.

Resident, University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine

Dr. Mary Thompson is a fourth-year resident in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology program at the University of Calgary. She first developed an interest in trauma-informed care and its role in women’s health care delivery in medical school. While in Hamilton, Mary was team lead for the COVID-19 Women’s Initiative which was aimed to help support and raise awareness for women’s shelters through the pandemic. She has since sought further opportunities in this area by attending the Alberta Sexual Assault conference, completing shifts with the Calgary Sexual Assault Response team, and pursuing research in the area. She has recently published a paper exploring the differences in mode of delivery in women with and without a history of intimate partner or sexual violence.

Associate Dean People, Culture and Health Promotion, University of Calgary; Physician, Foothill Medical Centre 

Dr. Rabiya Jalil is a Calgary-based family physician and an associate professor with the Department of Family Medicine. In her practice, Dr. Jalil primarily serves patients with complex medical and social needs with a focus on sexual and reproductive health. She has been a physician on the Calgary Sexual Assault Response Team since 2012. Dr. Jalil spearheaded the creation of the Alberta Sexual Assault Course and Conference with the CME Office and currently serves as the course chair.
