LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this module, you will be equipped to:

  • Recognize the importance of completing the appropriate workup for patients suspected of autoimmune encephalitis. 
  • Interpret CSF and serum neural antibody test results and recognize the limitations of antibody testing.
  • Describe clinical and radiological red flags for misdiagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis.
  • Apply the 3-step process of malignancy workup in patients suspected of having autoimmune encephalitis. 
  • Recognize the importance of timely first-line treatments for autoimmune encephalitis patients. 

NOTES

We aim to increase neurologists adherence to the Canadian Consensus Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Autoimmune Encephalitis [12] to:  

  • Increase complete diagnostic work up for patients with suspected autoimmune encephalitis,
  • Reduce delays in diagnosis and initiation of guideline-based treatment in patients with suspected autoimmune encephalitis,
  • Reduce unnecessary testing of neuronal autoantibodies.
